What is an Acid?

Any of a class of compounds that share certain basic chemical characteristics. Acids have low pH, are usually sour to the taste, and, in their pure form, are often corrosive. They can be either organic or inorganic compounds. Acids found in plant tissue (especially fruits) tend to prevent the secretion of fluids and shrink tissues.
