Researchers in the UK say, yes it can!

A short-term study was carried out by researchers in Glasgow Caledonian University where they monitored sixty healthy people between the ages of 19-25. Subjects participating in the study all had a Body Mass Index within the normal range and they monitored on four separate occasions.

The results found that gum, both the sugar free and standard variety was found to suppress appetite, specifically in the desire to eat sweet snacks.
