Research has confirmed cinnamon’s anti-bacterial and anti-fungal qualities, and a 2004 report in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry showed it kills salmonella, a type of bacteria that causes food poisoning.
“Cinnamon is also known to lower blood sugar as well as total cholesterol. With type-2 diabetes, it improves the body’s response to insulin, thus stabilising blood sugar levels,” says Felicia Rubin, senior pharmacist and integrative health consultant for the Wellness Warehouse group.
In a 2003 report in Diabetes Care, diabetics in a research study were given a placebo or cinnamon (up to six grams per day). After 40 days, the cinnamon group saw their blood sugar levels lowered by 18-29 percent.
