Breast Augmentation SurgeryThe Surgery
Your surgeon may perform your operation in an office facility, a freestanding surgery center, or a hospital outpatient facility. On rare occasions the surgery is also done as an inpatient in a hospital, in which case you can plan on staying for a day or two. The types of anesthesia used may be general or local combined with a sedative so you'll be relaxed but awake. Depending on your anatomy the incision may be made in the crease where the breast meets the chest, around the areola, or in the armpit. Every effort will be made to assure that the scars will be as inconspicuous as possible. Many surgeons believe that putting the implants behind your chest muscle may reduce certain complications, such as capsular contracture. This placement may also be less interfering with breast examination by mammogram than if the implant was placed directly behind the breast tissue. The surgery takes one to two hours, and stitches are used to close the incisions, which may be taped for extra support. Drainage tubes may be needed for several days. As healing progresses, pain will dissipate and you will begin feeling better. |
