Breast Reduction Surgery
What is Breast Reduction Surgery?
Breast reduction surgery, also known as mammoplasty, reshapes, lifts and reduces breast size. The dark skin surrounding the nipple, the areola, can also be reduced. The result is smaller, lighter, better shaped breasts.
Although not a simple procedure, it is normally considered safe when performed by a qualified, experienced plastic surgeon. Usually performed under general anesthesia, the operation takes approximately 4 hours or less. While some patients are able to return home the same day as surgery, others may require an overnight stay in the hospital. Each surgery procedure is specifically designed for that patient. Fat, glandular tissue and excess skin are removed from the breasts. The areola may also be reduced in size, and reshaped. The goal of each procedure is to decrease breast size and improve breast shape for better body proportion. When there is enough elasticity in the skin, breasts are also visibly lifted and more firm.
