What are the Risks?

Like any surgical procedure, breast surgery is not without risks and possible complications. These include:

• A negative reaction to the anesthesia.
• Possible asymmetry; unevenness, lopsidedness, or slight differences in the size of the breasts.
• A change in nipple color.
• Excessive bleeding, pooling of clotted blood, or pooling of watery blood.
• Breastfeeding problems.
• Boxy, also known as “Flat Breast;” usually temporary.
• Infection.
• Irregularities in position of nipples and/or areola.
• Nerve damage.
• Nipple loss.
• Nipple numbness; usually temporary, but could take months.
• Permanent numbness.
• Sensory change.
• Skin irregularities.
• Wound separation; does not require additional surgery.

As mentioned before, chance of complications is small, and for the most part, most patients are satisfied with their results.
