Breast Reduction Surgery
What are the Risks?
Like any surgical procedure, breast surgery is not without risks and possible complications. These include:
- A negative reaction to the anesthesia.
- Possible asymmetry; unevenness, lopsidedness, or slight differences in the size of the breasts.
- A change in nipple color.
- Excessive bleeding, pooling of clotted blood, or pooling of watery blood.
- Breastfeeding problems.
- Boxy, also known as “Flat Breast;” usually temporary.
- Infection.
- Irregularities in position of nipples and/or areola.
- Nerve damage.
- Nipple loss.
- Nipple numbness; usually temporary, but could take months.
- Permanent numbness.
- Sensory change.
- Skin irregularities.
- Wound separation; does not require additional surgery.
As mentioned before, chance of complications is small, and for the most part, most patients are satisfied with their results.
