Breast Reduction Surgery

Pre-surgery Preparations

Breast reduction surgery, also known as mammoplasty, reshapes, lifts and reduces breast If your medical insurance covers this type of medical procedure, a “predetermination letter” may be required before you have surgery. If so, make sure your doctor knows, and have him or her write the letter for you.

You will be given a list of specific instructions on how to prepare for surgery. Follow each instruction carefully — including guidelines about eating, drinking, smoking, and which medications and vitamins to avoid. Your doctor may also schedule a mammogram (breast x-ray) before surgery.

Although this type of surgery does not usually require a blood transfusion, if a large amount of tissue is going to be removed, your doctor may advise you to have a unit of blood drawn before the day of surgery. That way, if a transfusion is needed, your own blood can be used.

Purchase ace bandages or a few quality stretchy sports bras to wear the first few weeks following surgery. Arrange for someone to drive you to and from the surgery; also arrange for someone to be available to help you out for several days after surgery, if you need it.
