Breast Reduction SurgeryThe Surgery ItselfSpecific surgery techniques for breast reduction vary. The most common procedure involves anchor-shaped incisions that circle around the areola, and extend downward, following the natural curve of the crease beneath the breast. Excess glandular tissue, fat, and skin are removed; the nipple and areola are relocated higher up on the breast, and the breasts are reshaped. Liposuction may or may not be used to remove excess fat from the area under the armpit. Drainage tubes are sometimes required. Stitches are usually located around the areola, extending down into a vertical line, along the lower crease of the breast. Sometimes, the vertical part of the scar can be omitted. Occasionally liposuction alone can be used to reduce breast size, leaving only minimal scarring. |
