Breast Reduction Surgery

Recovery Period Tips

  • Ice packs applied to the chest the day of surgery help alleviate pain and reduce swelling.
  • Do not sleep on your stomach for the first two weeks after surgery.
  • Do not shower or bathe until any drainage tubes have been removed.
  • Wear loose clothing during the recovery period.
  • Moisturize the breasts daily; avoid getting lotion on taped areas.
  • Maintain a stable weight.
  • Drink plenty of water; eat a healthy diet.

If you are a smoker, you were instructed by your doctor not to smoke before surgery, or while recovering. Smoking inhibits blood flow and hampers proper healing of incisions. Do not smoke until your doctor gives the okay.

Avoid lifting and pushing heavy objects during recovery. Avoid sexual activity for as long as your physician advises. Anything more than a small amount of fluid draining from the surgical wound should be reported to your physician.

Follow the detailed instructions your physician gave you; the recovery period usually lasts 4 – 6 weeks. You will feel weak and tire more easily the first few weeks after surgery; this is normal, and you will soon feel more energetic.
