Cranberry Treatment for Stroke Patients

Stroke victims may make a faster recovery if they drink cranberry juice. An extract of the berry can halve the rate at which brain cells die in the aftermath of blood clot on the brain, according to the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth, in the US.

The research shows that cranberries could help to speed up the recovery process — particularly in the early stages when the most severe damage occurs.

Researchers still do not know the specific phytochemicals that appear to be responsible for the protective effect of cranberries. However, they believe that they may belong to a class of potent antioxidants called anthocyanins, which are common in both types of berries and are also responsible for giving the berries their characteristic dark color.
