Most people think that because they are exercising in the gym or even when working out outdoors, they will get leaner, stronger and fitter. What most of them don’t realize is that what you eat after your exercise session makes a big difference, and it’s not just the time you put in at the gym that counts.

A study published in the Journal of Applied Physiology aims to set the record straight and shows how the benefits of exercise are affected by what one eats after his or her workout.

Senior study author Jeffrey F. Horowitz of the University of Michigan says, “differences in what you eat after exercise produce different effects on the body’s metabolism.”

Therefore, if you really want to know whether or not your workout is in fact working, you really need to look at the whole picture: what you are eating after your workout as well as the effects of your exercise.
