Eating less is better than exercise for delaying the ageing process say researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in the USA. Eating a low-kilojoule, nutritionally balanced diet was found to lower concentration of a thyroid hormone called triiodothyronine (T3), which affects the body's metabolic balance. Researchers also found that kilojoule restriction lowers the levels of a potent inflammatory molecule called tumour necrosis factor alpha (TNF). Experts say the lower levels of T3 and reduced inflammation may slow the natural ageing process by slowing the body's metabolic rate and reducing damage caused by inflammation.
