What is Epiglottitis?

Epiglottitis is a relatively rare but serious illness that strikes suddenly, mostly in children aged one to six years (principally in the second year). It occasionally occurs in older children and adults.

The infection causes inflammation of the pharynx, and swelling of the epiglottis.

Although it is a bacterial infection, other children in contact with an affected child are unlikely to be infected.
