What is Hyssop?
Hyssop refers to a group of herbaceous plants which may first have been grown in the Mediterranean. Its uses are numerous — it can be an herb used for seasoning, but is more often used in medicinal remedies. Prepared as an infusion, hyssop will soothe colic, improve digestion and eliminate flatulence. It is an excellent nerve tonic, and also helps one to build up strength after an illness. It is recommended for coughs, colds, flu, and as a gargle for sore throats.
Farmers enjoy the varieties of hyssop because they attract bees, providing surer ways of pollinating crops. The flowers, which bloom in late May, are quite pretty, and any variety of this plant can be a nice addition to a wildflower garden.
