What is Iliotibial Band Syndrome?

Running

Iliotibial band syndrome (ITB) occurs frequently in runners or cyclists, and is caused by a combination of overuse and biomechanical factors.

With ITB, you'll feel pain on the outside of your knee which appears during your run and goes away when you stop. The iliotibial band is a band of tissue that runs from the outside of your hip and extends to the outside part of the knee, and the tightness is usually the result of strain from overtraining or doing too much too soon. With any sort of injury it's important to get a proper diagnosis to be able to treat the cause, and not just the symptoms.
