Licorice Root: Uses and Benefits
Licorice root, which is also referred to as “sweet root” or “Glycyrrhiza glabara”, is a commonly used flavour enhancer for candy, cough syrup and even laxatives.
Licorice root is often used as a dietary supplement for the treatment of throat infections, stomach ulcers as well as bronchitis. It has also been used to treat various conditions such as arthritis and is known to assist with bladder infections, stomach inflammation as well as stomach spasms.
Liquirtin, an extract from licorice root, is often used to treat melasma — a type of pigmentation disorder of the skin. However, no studies have been found to prove that licorice is in fact an effective treatment for melasma.
Licorice root contains silicone, magnesium and thiamine.
