Meditation for Relaxation and
Stress Reduction

With modern living, stress is almost unavoidable. However, even though it may seem that there is no escaping it, you can still practice various methods and train your mind to deal with it. One of the best ways to achieve this is through the ancient art of mediation.

At first, sitting like a Buddha and telling yourself to relax may seem a little silly, but with practice and consistency you too can master this art and enjoy inner peace and tranquility.

Meditating is a great way to clear your mind and escape from stress.

When starting out there are a few basic things to consider.

Space
First, you need to find a quiet space, in or outdoors where you can just relax and where you will not be disturbed. You don’t need a lot of room, but space creates a great calming and uncluttered environment. Switch off all distractions such as the TV and put your cell phone on silent. To help create the relaxing atmosphere, you could also have some soft, calming music in the background.

Comfort
Comfort is important. Make sure the clothes you are wearing are loose fitting and ensure that the surface you are sitting on is comfortable by placing a pillow underneath.

Posture
Sit on the floor and cross your legs, keeping an upright posture with your head straight. Your hands should be placed on your knees facing upwards, with your thumbs and middle fingers touching. This is done to keep the flow of energy from escaping your body. It doesn’t matter how you cross your legs as long as you are comfortable.

Relaxation
Close your eyes and try to quiet your mind. One of the best ways to do this is to focus on the blackness and to try avoiding thinking about too much. Thoughts will randomly pop into your head, you must be consistent to clear them away and focus only on the blackness. Mastering this takes a lot of practice so don’t despair if you don’t get it right the first time.

Breathing
Your breathing is important. Try deep breathing from the belly and expanding the air throughout the body before releasing. You can try gentle humming sounds that will help you concentrate on clearing your mind as well.

Enjoy, relax and de-stress!
