What is Paget’s Disease of the Bone?
Paget’s disease of the bone or osteitis deformans is a chronic bone disease, particularly of the long bones (e.g. the femur), skull and spine that results in them becoming thickened, disorganized and soft, causing them to bend. The cause is unknown and although there is no cure, good results are being obtained with calcitonin. Calcitonin is a hormone that is produced by the thyroid gland, which regulates levels of calcium in the blood. The main symptom is pain.
