What is Pericarditis?

Inflammation of the pericardium, the sac that forms outer covering of the heart. Occasionally the inflamed pericardium thickens and constricts the heart, a condition known as constrictive pericarditis. In some cases fluid may accumulate and swell the sac (pericardial effusion). Pericarditis sometimes occurs together with pleurisy.
