What is a Placebo?

A preparation that has no medicinal powers. A placebo is prescribed when a doctor decides that a patient has no need of a drug but knows that the patient will not be satisfied unless he is given a prescription. In many cases the placebo relieves the patient's condition, simply because he believes it to be a medicine and therefore has faith in its powers.
