What is Quinine?

Quinine is a colorless alkaloid, derived from the bark of certain (cinchona) trees, which is a strong antiseptic and especially effective against the malaria parasite. It was formerly widely used in the treatment of malaria but has now largely been replaced because it is toxic in larger doses. In small amounts it has a stimulating effect and is used in tonic water.
