Seychelles, officially the Republic of Seychelles, comprises and archipelago of over one hundred granitic and coral island in the western Indian Ocean, some 1,500 kilometres (932 mi) east of mainland Africa, northeast of the island of Madagascar.
Seychelles, with an estimated population of 84,000, has the smallest population of any African state. Over ninety percent of the population lives on the main island, Mahé. The climate is hot and humid with heavy rainfall. The economy is based mainly on tourism, fishing and light manufacturing.
Seychelles is known as Theyngadheebu in Dhivehi, the language of Maldives.
