What is Tinea?

Infection of the skin by one of several fungi that feed on the dead outer layer (epidermis), affecting especially the groin (tinea cruris) and the skin between the toes (tinea pedis or athlete’s foot), causing intense itching and a raised scaly rash that may form circles (‘ringworm’). Tinea of the hair or nails is very persistent.
