Tomatoes Help Prevent Sunburn
Researchers at Newcastle University found that volunteers who ate tomato paste over a 12-week period were 33% more protected against sunlight than those who didn't. It's thought this is down to a powerful antioxidant called lycopene, which is able to neutralize harmful UV rays.
But don't ditch the sunscreen. The researchers calculated the protection offered by the tomato paste was equivalent to a sunscreen with SPF of just 1.3. Nothing takes the place of proper protective measures, like sunscreen, wearing a hat and avoiding the sun between 10am – 3pm.
