Water Retention: Causes and Remedies

Water retention is the buildup of excess fluid in the tissues. Water retention is typically first noticed by swelling of the extremities, and is a big factor in looking your best. Women tend to suffer much more from this problem than men, probably due to their much higher estrogen levels.

Factors such as food allergies, lack of essential fatty acids, and hormonal imbalances can play a role in how much water is held under the skin. Water-rich food such as fruit and vegetables as well as high intakes of seeds and oils can help keep this problem in check. Supplements such as borage oil, vitamin B6, biotin, zinc, dandelion root and evening primrose oil can also help.

Since water retention can be caused by medication, heart damage, liver damage, kidney failure, and lymphedema, it is advisable to consult with your doctor.
